"Can I fix it, or should I just replace it?"

As a homeowner, you've probably asked yourself this question hundreds of times. It's an age-old question that is often never accurately decided upon. Some people might try to repair something even though it's beyond repair, while others will opt to replace something even though it just needs a quick DIY fix.

This question applies to your landscape lighting as well. If you're wondering whether you should repair or replace, you should consider a few things first.

Repair
The fact of the matter is that just about everything (not just lighting) will need occasional repairs to keep it working the way it should. Sometimes all your outdoor lighting system needs is a simple fix to get it back up and running, especially if your exterior lighting installationwas done correctly and using high-quality materials. Even if you perform regular maintenance, your system could still require repair for many reasons. One of the most common causes of a damaged system is a result of work being done on or around the property. If you just finished a home remodel, dug a new pool, or maybe the city installed a new sewer line, it could have damaged or disrupted your lighting system. Other reasons for failure that require a repair are:

  • A pinched wire;

  • Water in a socket which continuously trips the breaker;

  • Broken fixture or new fixture with uncapped wire;

  • Overloading the system with higher wattage bulbs than what is recommended

There are numerous other possible reasons for failure that just require some troubleshooting.

Replace
Every so often, a system will fail in way that can't be fixed with replacement bulbs, or costs significantly more to repair than it does to replace. If you're wondering if this is one of those times, the first thing you should do is have a landscape lighting company send an expert to evaluate your system. They'll look for broken, cracked, bent, or corroded fixtures; exposed or frayed wires; poor wire connections; a rusted transformer and more. If they notice any of these problems, chances are good that they'll advise you to replace the system. A brand new exterior lighting installation could be less expensive than the list of repairs required, and also give your home an update.

If after reading this you still aren't sure whether or not you should repair or replace, you can contact an outdoor lighting service to come and take a look at your system. A majority (73%) of homeowners hired a professional for an outdoor project back in 2016, so if you're in need of a company someone will surely be able to recommend one. A lighting expert will give you a professional opinion, which is probably more believable than a blog post.
